Greatness was needed. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ superstar quarterback, knew his best was required. The scoreboard at SoFi Stadium demanded it, too.
With a little more than nine minutes left in regulation and the Chiefs trailing the Los Angeles Chargers by eight points, Mahomes found himself in one of the most difficult situations for an NFL quarterback: When almost every snap is a passing play and 11 defenders determine each step in the pocket, his decision-making and the release of the ball must be precise.
Mahomes, in a matter of minutes, transformed what appeared to be an underwhelming performance into one of his most magnificent. He orchestrated three must-score possessions for the Chiefs into touchdowns. He scrambled, improvised and persevered.

On Sept. 10, before he had coached a down of regular-season football for the Chargers, Brandon Staley was asked about how aggressive he planned to be on fourth downs. The Chargers were two days away from opening their 2021 season on the road against the Washington Football Team.
“I’m a big fan of trusting our quarterback, of putting the ball in his hands and putting pressure on the defense. I believe in that,” the rookie head coach said. “From a strategic standpoint, there are a lot of reasons why. Fear is definitely not going to be a motivator for us, one that we make decisions by. We’re going to be able to live with our results because we trust our process and we trust our players. … Sometimes you’re going to have to live with the criticism. That’s part of the job.”
We are now 15 weeks into the NFL season, and every word Staley said in that response has held true.
If you are clamoring about his decision-making — if you are surprised or put off or confused — then you have not been paying attention.

Another game, another record for Patrick Mahomes.
7 such games is the most by a player in his first 5 seasons, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Dan Marino who had 6 from 1983-1987.

Travis Kelce’s 34-yard catch and run touchdown in overtime gave the Chiefs a 34-28 win in what was one of the most exciting games in Thursday night football history.
It was Kelce’s second touchdown reception of the game, as it followed his 7-yard scoring play late in the fourth quarter that tied the score at 28. Kelce ended the night with a career-high 191 receiving yards on 10 catches. Tyreek Hill was just as impactful, as he racked up 12 catches on 13 targets for 148 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown that tied the game at 21.
The Chargers adopted a very aggressive playcalling approach on offense, as Brandon Staley went for it on fourth down on five occasions. But that mindset may have hurt Los Angeles more than it helped, as the Chiefs stopped the Chargers on two fourth down plays that occurred inside the Kansas City 5-yard line and ended another drive with a fourth down stop at the Chiefs 28-yard line. Los Angeles also leaned on the run more than any game this year, as its 192 rushing yards was a season-high in that category.
Justin Herbert set an NFL record for most passing yards in his first two years, as his 8,394 yards topped the previous record of 8,196 set by Andrew Luck in 2012-13.
Kansas City (10-4) hosts Pittsburgh next week. The Chargers (8-6) travel to Houston to play the Texans in Week 16. Kansas City has won seven consecutive games and has a two-game lead in the AFC West.

There have been nine drives in this game that have had their final offensive play inside the opponents' ten-yard line. None of them have ended in field goals, five in touchdowns, one in a turnover and three in turnover-by-downs. Teams typically do not get to their opponent ten-yard line this often, but they even less frequently fail at scoring points. The Chiefs' touchdown and conversion had to be cathartic for a number of reasons

Travis Kelce breaks out of his two-game slump on a 69-yard catch and run to set up a 1-yard TD reception by Tyreek Hill. A terrific scramble play by Mahomes on the 2-point play leads to a completion to Clyde Edwards-Helaire to tie the game at 21.

The Chargers just can’t close out red zone drives, as after converting a 4th and 1 to set up 1st and goal, Joshua Kelley fumbles the ball trying to dive over the pile and the Chiefs recover. LA still leads 14-13 and Kansas City has to start their next drive from their 2-yard line.
